A fuel gauge is a device inside of a car or other vehicle that measures the amount of fuel still in the vehicle. This type of system can be used to measure the amount of gasoline or some other type of liquid. First measure tank depth from the top of the tank near the sending unit to the bottom. In this article we ll learn why our fuel gauges behave the way they do.

First let s see how a typical sender works. The sender which measures the level of fuel in the tank and the gauge which displays that level to the driver. This also ensures that the gauge reads properly. Calculate the level of fuel in the tank by dividing the measurement taken on the metallic ruler by the total height of the tank.

This measurement is not meaningful however until you compare it to the tank s capacity. Many large transport aircraft use a different fuel gauge design principle. This measurement determines the length of the sending unit s float arm.
